What kind of Europe we want? Christoph Bertram

Not only the French and Dutch voted against the European Constitutional Treaty, but recently the Irishman. One more reason to ask what kind of Europe we really want and what is actually a political European Union or should be. Rejected
the EU will certainly be of conservatives and nationalists, which the liberal reforms and the Brussels guidelines go too far. But we should keep to the progressiveness of the EU, its post-national structure and liberal FreizügG. But this Freizügigigkeit passes quickly reach their limits - to those of the "Fortress Europe", in which African refugees seek always to get admission and often suffer from the walls of shipwreck.
The European economic liberalism relaxes not only the limits within their own union, he also carries economic power abroad, reproduced neoliberal structures in other continents. Not least, the Iberian giant trawlers fish for which the West African coast empty, blame for the economic plight of Senegalese fishermen are, in turn, the escape to their poverty, open to Melilla, only to fail in front of the gates of the fortress there.
South American countries have recently protested to legal discrimination against refugees and a stricter deportation policies and threatening economic sanctions (eg, the Venezuelan oil supply boycott) to the EU (otherwise this is even more of a means whose use of them yourself, as in the case of Iran).

Is Europe so only a neo-liberal empire itself off like a fortress to the outside, anxiously intent to secure their own prosperity for emergency and military?

But we have to regard Europe as an opportunity. However, this requires more democracy and greater participation of citizens. We need to make Europe from below and not be left to the industrialized countries in economic elites and corporations. The EU can then be pioneers for social, ecological and democratic development and also develop in this crucial global impact.

'Is this beautiful idea of Europe but not the neo-liberal, militaristic reality? One should also not deny the existence of the conservative opponents of this model. The more it requires an active policy-making the EU, addressing the issue of the Constitution. We can not believe that they have only the choice between an old-fashioned nationalism and the model Merkel / Sarkozy. It's more about the foundations and the basic orientation of the EU.

to a reflection of such lacking the leaders seem to be patient, as well as the Chancellor said recently that we are not a new postponement of the constitutional process could afford. But why not? The national constitution movements have often used the start of decades, why now with the European Constitution a hurry? Better in the long run a good and democratically legitimate constitution, as on the spot eine schlechte und von oben oktroyierte.

about American war plans

Even if the risk of the current Iranian government is difficult to imagine a protest: it represents only a minority of the Iranian society that seems to have lost beyond the nuclear issue and martial rhetoric of their capital. There will be better days!

attack to protect the UN?

Iran refuses stubbornly to the nuclear dispute to comply with the requirements of the UN Security Council. The Bush administration could take this as grounds for war

In Berlin, there are still only increasing people that the Mitwirkung der Bundesrepublik an weiteren Sanktionen gegen Iran damit begründen, dass Amerika auf diese Weise in diplomatische Bemühungen eingebunden und Präsident Bush von einem Militärschlag gegen Teheran abgehalten worden wäre.
